As an intentional Atlanta newborn photographer, my styling inventory removes the need to plan outfits for your baby AND ensures posed, studio-style newborn portraits have a coordinated, curated look.
When I first started Jessica Grace Photography, newborn photography wasn’t on my radar. I would do a few lifestyle sessions here and there, focusing mainly on the entire family. But shortly after I decided to really lean into growing my Atlanta photography business, I got the chance to photograph an expecting mama. Then shortly after, her baby.
She wanted a few natural posed images of just baby, so I purchased my first basket, a few layers, a wrap. I had started a bit of education already, so I was aware of simple and safe posing techniques.
And y’all, I FELL IN LOVE!
What should my baby wear for their newborn photos?
After I started marketing newborn photography to metro Atlanta’s growing families and specializing in this work, I got this question from every mom.
In my opinion, it’s not a postpartum mama’s job to think … “hm, how could I curate a few looks that would match our home’s aesthetic?” Or “should I order a few sets of wraps and bonnets so we can have coordinated looks in our newborn photos?”
I decided to remove this decision and level up my approach to in-home newborn photography at the same time.
What’s a styling inventory?
A literal inventory of things used to style a photoshoot. They vary of course but my newborn photography styling inventory includes:
- Headbands (aka: tie backs) and bonnets
- Large selection of swaddles and wraps in various colors and textures
- Array of props, like baskets, small beds, bowls, chairs and buckets
- Accessories such as small stuffed animals and faux florals
- Layers of all sorts, sizes, colors and textures for styling newborn setups
- Flokatis (large fur rugs)
- Posing aids, such as lifters, supports and bean bags to help pose and adjust baby safely
- Posing bed (I actually use small foldable dog bed, which surprises people)
- Portable, professional lighting
- Soothing tools, like a NICU nurse-designed designed swaddle (for my super touchy babies), gentle sound machine and vibrating pad
Two important questions I ask before styling your newborn session:
- What colors do you HATE?
- Can you send me a few photos or videos of your home?
My aesthetic leans toward neutrals and earthy colors, which I find I can incorporate into the look of most homes. But if you have a bright yellow nursery or you hate the color green … it’s helpful to know these things upfront.
Why is it valuable? I design each newborn collection. It’s not a one-size-fits-all. I don’t take the exact five things to each session.
I’m very deliberate in pulling items that will complement your baby’s skin tones. I want the pictures to match the vibe of your home so it’s easy to print them, put them on your wall and have them coordinate seamlessly with your style. I want to avoid colors you have a distaste for and bring things that will support your baby best.
I do all this through thoughtful pre-planning, clear communication with you and having a robust newborn photography styling inventory to work from.
