Family photography should be for every family—not just the ones who can sit still and smile on command. If you’ve ever hesitated to book a session because your child processes the world differently, I want you to know this: your family is welcome here.
As a family photographer who sees accessibility as essential, not optional—and as someone with a family history of working closely with neurodivergent children—I know how overwhelming the idea of a traditional photo session can feel. Will it be too much? Will your child be expected to “perform”? Will it even be worth it?
Let me reassure you: we don’t do things the traditional way here. My sessions are quiet, flexible and rooted in connection. We move at your child’s pace. We work with their needs—not around them. And we let their real personality shine.
A Backyard Session That Says It All
One recent session took place right in the family’s own backyard—a familiar, safe space for their youngest son. There were no stiff outfits or forced shoes, no pressure to pose just so and absolutely no “No, you can’t have that stormtrooper in your photos!”
Because really—why not?
That stormtrooper was part of his world, part of what made him feel safe and understood in that moment. So it was part of their family photos, too.
That small choice helped set the tone for the whole session: relaxed, comfortable, authentic and full of laughter. There was no need to pose perfectly, sit still or pretend to be anything other than who they are.
The brothers climbed trees, hung upside down, chased each other and laughed freely—completely at ease in their own backyard. By letting the session unfold in a way that honored who they are, together, in this exact season we got the sweetest gallery full of images that feel honest, joyful and uniquely theirs.
What to Expect from a Neurodivergent-Inclusive Session
Pre-Session Communication
Before our session, I’ll send a questionnaire with space to share any diagnoses, sensory sensitivities or unique needs. If you’d rather talk it through in person or on the phone, I’m always happy to connect ahead of time. Understanding your child means I can prepare intentionally—for them, and for you.
A Child-Led, Pressure-Free Approach
Forget “sit still and smile.” Some of the best images happen in the in-between: a hand reaching out, a moment of focus, the way your child’s energy flows naturally. Breaks are welcome. Stimming is welcome. Movement is welcome.
Sensory-Aware Environments
Where we shoot matters. Whether that’s your backyard, a quiet park or your living room floor, we’ll find a spot that feels right. I use natural light when possible and avoid anything overstimulating.
Letting Personality Take the Lead
Glasses, toys, favorite shoes, stuffed animals—they’re all part of the story. There’s no pressure to conform or “tone it down.” These details don’t take away from your photos. They are the photos.
A Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
The goal isn’t the perfect pose. It’s the feeling of being seen, understood and loved—just as you are. That’s what I aim to document: your real, beautiful life.
Every family is different. Every child is different. And every session should reflect that.
If you’ve been waiting for the right time, or the right photographer who understands, I hope this helps you feel a little more ready. I’d be honored to tell your family’s story—on your terms, in your way.
