Advice from an Atlanta family photographer on taking photos at Prospect Farms

Prospect Farms is one of the most sought-after photo locations in metro Atlanta — and for good reason. The setups are stunning, the light is beautiful and the owners work hard to keep everything in top shape. But as with any popular venue, there are a few things worth knowing ahead of time so your experience feels smooth and stress-free.

Prospect Farms is more than a photography venue, it’s someone’s home — literally.

Prospect Farms is a family’s personal property, not just a public photo spot. They, along with their team, work tirelessly to keep everything clean and beautifully curated for photographers and clients. Treat it like someone’s home — because it is. Follow your photographer’s instructions carefully, handle all setups gently, and please don’t wander or take photos of other setups on your own. Your photographer should share the “rules” with you beforehand but try your best to respect them (it’s hard, especially with the cute furry animals!) but it does go a long way.

It’s busy — really busy — in fall and around Christmas, like a lot of photograph venues in Atlanta.

Give yourself plenty of time. Arrive early, expect full parking and build in a few extra minutes for walking between areas. The best way to make your Prospect Farms photo session feel calm is to plan for a generous cushion of time. Especially if you only have a ten minute session, you can’t afford to be even five minutes late navigating the property, checking in (you do have to check in when you arrive!) and getting to your setup.

Know what space you’re using before you show up at Prospect Farms for your shoot.

Prospect Farms has two main areas: The Farmhouse (the indoor studio near the entrance) and The Farm (the outdoor setups toward the back). If mobility is a concern, talk to your photographer in advance — golf cart transport can be arranged, and it’s stroller friendly, though there’s a 5–7 minute walk depending on your setup. Your photographer should send clear parking and check-in instructions so you’re not guessing when you arrive.

Two things to note: If you’re using The Farm space/setups (not The Farmhouse)  there is NO real restroom or location to change your clothes. There’s a portable restroom right be the parking that is kept clean but gauge your family’s needs and build in time to stop beforehand if a bathroom break is necessary.

And if you’re planning multiple outfits, be sure to work out the details with your photographer beforehand so they can bring a portable changing solution for you.

Dress and plan for the landscape of Prospect Farms (bring shoes!)

Bring walking shoes — seriously. The ground can be wet or muddy, especially after rain or morning dew. Carry your dress shoes and swap them right before your session. If you’ve booked a mini, arrive camera-ready otherwise and plan for a short window. During the holidays, sessions often run back to back, so every minute counts.

Some setups are heated, some aren’t. On cold mornings, we may have to fight condensation at some setups — your photographer will help you work around that. Around Christmas, some setups include Santa, others don’t, so clarify that before booking.

My biggest hack for taking photos at Prospect Farms

Prospect Farms parking lot during busy season

I very rarely do minis (both in general and at Prospect Farms) and I almost never shoot there on the weekends. I always try to work with my clients to book weekday sessions instead. (Y’all, this is the parking lot at Prospect Farms – during Christmas setup season – not on a weekend! Just me and my sweet family.) Even during the holidays, a weekday morning 30-minute session (while yes, a bit higher in cost) means fewer people, slower pacing and a far more relaxed experience. It allows for moments that are connected, child-led and more in line with the values I center my work around as your family photographer.

Booking at Prospect Farms: What to Ask Yourself and your Photographer

It’s important to take a moment to ask yourself: What does a successful family photo session look like for my family?

Is it a curated holiday photo for your Christmas card, where the hustle and quick pace could be part of the fun? Or would you rather slow down and spend more time together, focusing on connection and storytelling?

There’s no wrong answer. Minis absolutely have their place, and there are many talented photographers in our area who do them beautifully. If you’re looking for that style and don’t know who to go with, ask me — I’m happy to share names of local photographers who excel in that high volume space.

And if the slower, more storytelling-focused experience feels like a better fit for your family, then maybe we’d be a good match.

Your experience at Prospect Farms will depend just as much on your photographer as it does on the space itself. It’s a unique, busy location, and preparation makes all the difference. Before booking, ask your photographer:

  • Have you worked at Prospect Farms before?

  • Can you provide clear preparation instructions and expectations for arrival?

  • What are your best tips for making sure things go smoothly?

  • Can I see examples of your work from Prospect Farms?

  • How do you typically run sessions there?

It’s not absolutely necessary that your photographer has worked there before — every great photographer starts somewhere — but they should be able to communicate clearly about the venue, understand how sessions flow and help you feel confident before you arrive.

Considering Prospect Farms but have additional questions? I’m happy to share what I know – feel free to reach out to me HERE.
