Bringing a newborn home is a season filled with tender moments, sleepless nights and more love than you thought possible. When it comes time for your in-home newborn session, most families focus on what they should do to prepare. But often, it’s the unexpected little details that make the biggest difference. These are four surprising things you might not think about — but avoiding them can help your photos feel calmer, cleaner and more beautiful.

Chipped nail polish and bulky accessories

Hands show up everywhere in newborn sessions — holding your baby, wrapping around tiny fingers or all together as a family. Chipped nail polish, long nails or even bulky smart watches can be distracting in these close-ups. While your hands don’t need to be “perfect,” a quick touch-up or removing old polish altogether helps keep the focus on connection, not accessories.

Nightstand clutter and cords everywhere

Your master bedroom is one of the most common spots for newborn photos — not because it’s always bright and airy, but because it’s where families naturally gather, snuggle in and feel at ease. That comfort always shines through in your images. Nightstands and cords are sneaky clutter magnets: phone chargers, remotes, bottles, lotion, random odds and ends. My best tip? Toss everything into a laundry basket and hide it in the bathroom. After the session, one trip puts it all back in place and your photos look serene instead of distracted by everyday items.

Socks that steal attention

Bare feet photograph beautifully, but if socks feel more comfortable, avoid bright white athletic ones or pairs with logos across the toes. These little details stand out more than you’d expect in your photos. Neutral socks or barefoot are best for keeping the attention on your family.

Snacks that backfire

If your newborn has older siblings, snacks can be the secret to getting them involved in photos — a little gummy tucked into a swaddle to encourage reaching for baby or a favorite bite held above my head to win a quick smile at the camera. The key isn’t whether to bring snacks, but which ones. Skip chocolate that melts everywhere, snacks that take forever to chew or messy, crumbly options like veggie straws or peanut butter crackers. Simple, quick bites are best so your toddler can get back to snuggling their new sibling without constant cleanup breaks.

Final Thoughts

Newborn photos don’t need to be perfect. They just need to be yours. Paying attention to a few surprising details ahead of time makes the experience smoother and the photos feel as natural and timeless as they should.
