Welcoming baby girl home:  the in-home newborn session that felt like a turning point.

There’s something really special about being invited into both the before and the after. I met the Burtons when their little girl was still a hope, a name being whispered, a belly being cradled. Their maternity session felt light and full of anticipation.

And then, one quiet afternoon, I walked into their home and met her.

Their newborn session was slow and unhurried, the way newborn days often are. The dogs chimed in from the deck while mom and dad settled on the couch or shared a laugh in the nursery. Baby girl stayed sleepy and calm, wrapped softly and even dressed for a few moments in dad’s favorite team jersey. The light was gentle, the pace was calm and there was a quiet sense of something settling into place—not just in their home, but for me too.

This session stands out to me not because it was perfect or styled just so, but because it gave me a glimpse of what’s possible when a family opens the door and trusts you with these early moments. There was one photo in particular—her tiny lips pursed, hands relaxed, light skimming across her cheek—that made me pause.

I remember looking at it and thinking, I want to do more of this. And I want to get better and better at it.

I’ve photographed newborns before, but something about this session helped me understand what I’m really drawn to: the tenderness, the unpredictability, the way newborn sessions ask you to slow down and watch, not just shoot.

Since then, I’ve deepened my education through newborn safety trainings and workshops, expanded my collection of wraps, swaddles and textures, and leaned more fully into this work—with curiosity, patience and deep respect.

I have so much more to learn. But I’m thankful for families like the Burtons who make space for that growth. Who offer up their trust and invite me into the stillness and beauty of their beginnings. This session, in so many ways, helped shape the photographer I’m becoming.
