Are you wondering “when is the best time to book a newborn photographer?”

Short and Sweet on Booking Your Newborn Session (in case you don’t want to keep scrolling!)

If you’re expecting in early 2026, here’s the quick answer you’re looking for:

  • The best time to book your newborn photographer is between 12–20 weeks pregnant.

  • Newborn sessions are ideally photographed within 5–14 days after birth, when babies are sleepiest and easiest to settle.

  • Booking early safeguards your place on the calendar—even if baby arrives early or late.

  • Early planning gives us time to style your in-home newborn session beautifully, review your in-home space and ensure we’re working with the best natural light.

  • Already farther along? Still reach out—there’s often space to make something special happen.

A little preparation now means you can simply savor those fleeting newborn days while I take care of the rest.

Let’s Go Deeper: Why Booking Your Newborn Photographer Early Matters

Preparing to welcome a new baby is such a tender, exciting season—and somewhere between buying the first tiny onesie and assembling the crib, many parents suddenly wonder:
“When am I supposed to book newborn photos?”

The short answer: earlier than you think.

Newborn photography is unlike any other type of session because it relies on a very specific developmental window. That tiny, sleepy, curly, fresh-from-the-womb stage is beautifully temporary, which is exactly why newborn photographers build their calendars differently than traditional photographers.

The Ideal Window for a Newborn Photo Session: 5–14 Days Old

There’s a sweet spot where newborn portraits have that timeless coziness everyone loves. Typically, that’s between five and fourteen days old. During this stage:

  • Babies are naturally sleepier

  • They settle more comfortably into gentle positions

  • Feeding rhythms become a bit more predictable

  • Their skin is often smoothest

  • Their limbs still have that sweet, curled newborn softness

Because this window is short—and because babies don’t follow calendars—we build flexibility around your due date rather than scheduling a rigid day months in advance.

So, When Should You Actually Book your newborn photographer?

Most families reserve their date between 12–20 weeks pregnant.

This is the time when:

  • You’ve gotten through those early pregnancy milestones

  • You know your due date

  • My calendar is the most open

  • You don’t have to compete for limited monthly availability

I only take a select number of due dates each month to keep room for early or late arrivals. When you book early, you’re securing your spot in that flexible window.

What If i have my baby early… or too late and i miss my newborn session window?

Every baby has their own timeline, and I account for that during booking.

When you reserve your due date, I hold space around your due date—but we don’t choose a specific day until baby arrives. That way, regardless of whether baby makes an early entrance or takes their time, we’ll still photograph them within that ideal newborn window.

Do I need to know the baby’s gender before booking my newborn photographer?

Not at all.

Styling, colors, props, and sets can all be finalized later. Many families book before they know gender simply to secure availability—and we refine all the beautiful details together as your due date approaches.

Reserving your due date early Creates a Better Experience

A newborn session isn’t just a date on a calendar. It’s a thoughtful, slow, gentle experience designed around your family’s rhythms. Booking early gives us time to:

1. Plan a beautifully cohesive session

We talk through colors you love (and those you don’t), the styling direction you’re drawn to, and what will look timeless in your home.

2. Prepare your space for in-home photography

I learn about your light, your home’s aesthetic, and the rooms you’re considering photographing in. That allows me to create sets that feel authentic to your family.

3. Schedule with flexibility

A newborn session typically spans a two-hour window—though realistically, in-home sessions often run longer.
The beauty of being in your home is: we’re never up against the clock.

4. Reduce stress during an already full season

Once your date is secured, everything else becomes simple. You can settle into newborn life without scrambling to find last-minute availability.

Is It Ever Too Late to Ask?

Please always ask.

Even if you’re late in pregnancy—or your baby has already arrived—there are often ways to fit you in. My calendar shifts throughout the month, and newborn sessions are flexible by design. It never hurts to reach out.

Final Thoughts for my gwinnett and metro atlanta growing families:

Your baby’s newborn days pass quickly—but the images we create together will last for decades. Booking early allows us to plan intentionally, photograph your baby in their sweetest early days and create artwork that feels deeply connected to your home and your family.
