“What should I wear for my newborn photoshoot?”
– Every Mom (at the last minute)

Preparing for your in-home newborn session shouldn’t feel overwhelming. This season of life is already full and tender and emotional. What you wear matters, but not in the Pinterest kind of way. More in the “let’s make sure your style fits this season of your life” kind of way.

As an Atlanta newborn photographer specializing in in-home, lifestyle newborn photography, my goal is always to help families feel comfortable, connected and fully themselves. Clothing should support that experience, not complicate it.

Let’s start with the basics.

The Basics: What to Wear (and What to Skip)

Think soft, simple and cohesive, not styled to perfection.

Do: Choose soft, neutral tones

Neutral does not mean boring. These colors photograph beautifully in natural indoor light and keep the focus on connection.

Great color choices

Cream, ivory, oatmeal and warm white
Soft beige, taupe and camel
Muted sage, dusty blue and soft gray
Gentle blush or clay tones

If you’re unsure, hold the fabric next to your baby’s skin. If it feels calm and natural, it will photograph that way too. (And as your newborn photographer, send pics! I’m always happy to mock up style boards, help source outfits, tell you what I think about color combinations.)

Don’t: Go high-contrast or overly bold

These tend to pull attention away from faces and emotion.

Try to avoid

Stark white or solid black
Neon or very saturated colors
Busy patterns, logos or large graphics
Bold stripes or heavy textures

What Mom Should Wear

Comfort comes first. Always.

Postpartum bodies deserve softness and ease. When you’re thinking about what to wear to your newborn photoshoot, the best outfits allow you to sit, stand, hold your baby and breathe without thinking about what you’re wearing.

Best options

Flowy dresses with movement
Soft knits, ribbed tanks or relaxed tops, stretchy fabric
Loose button-downs or wrap styles for easy skin-to-skin
Light layers like cardigans or cozy pullovers

Bare feet are always welcome during in-home newborn photos.

Skip

Tight waistbands
Stiff or structured fabrics
Anything that makes you tug or adjust

If you feel comfortable, it will show.

What Baby Should Wear

Less really is more. As an in-home newborn photographer, I bring my styling setups to the Atlanta families I serve – swaddles, wraps, accessories, outfits, props … everything we’ve discussed prior to your session.

Perfect choices

Simple onesies or soft sleepers
Neutral swaddles
Just a diaper and a cozy wrap

Wrinkles, flaky skin and tiny details are all part of this season. There’s no need to hide them.

What Partners and Siblings Should Wear

Aim for coordination, not matching.

Good choices

Soft tees, henleys or lightweight knits
Linen or cotton button-downs
Neutral bottoms like khaki, beige or soft denim

Everyone should be able to move, sit on the floor and cuddle comfortably. If it feels restrictive, it’s probably not the right choice.

The Reality: It’s More Than Just Your Outfit
But it’s also just an outfit

This part matters.

If you’ve had a cesarean or you’re moving through a particularly challenging recovery, please start there. Your comfort matters most. Skip anything that digs, pinches or presses into a healing body. No one can tell you what feels good to your changing body, so trust yourself.

And if you’re anything like me and honestly like most moms in those early postpartum days, be kind to yourself. Truly. Try Googling “pooch friendly outfits” and you’ll be amazed at how many stylish, soft and belly-hiding postpartum looks exist. They’re curated for this season for a reason.

Give yourself time. Don’t rush. Don’t give yourself thirty minutes to do hair and makeup only to feel tired, sweaty and defeated by the time it’s time for photos. Build in buffer. Slow the pace.

Try shifting your perspective from: “I have to get picture perfect even though I feel like a stranger in my own skin” to “This is a chance to be taken care of, to let someone else be in charge and to simply observe calmly.”

The entire experience should feel soft and gentle. Not just the in-home setting and the tenderness of a new baby, but the way you approach it too. Softly. Gently. In clothes that mirror that feeling and help you feel at home in your body again.

A Note on Styling Support

You’re not doing this alone.

As your Atlanta in-home newborn photographer, I help guide wardrobe choices ahead of your session and offer suggestions based on your home’s light and tones. You don’t need a brand new wardrobe. Thoughtful pieces you already love are more than enough.

Final Thoughts

Your baby doesn’t care what you’re wearing.
Your photos will matter because you’re in them, exactly as you are in this season.

That’s what we’re preserving.
